🐝 Cycle Cities Buzz - Community care, and off-season realities 🚲

Hi Reader,

I want to open this week’s newsletter by welcoming a fantastic new additions to our network: Colorbike from Marseille. We are thrilled to have you on board!

Symposium News 🀝

I also want to take a moment to talk about something that has completely touched my heart this week: the incredible care and support within Cycle Cities. Seeing how everyone stepped up and organized themselves to help Cem attend the upcoming symposium is a true reflection of the core values that make this community so special.

We are currently working on the details for Hamburg 2027, and you can check out all the information page here:

Groupwork Gold Nuggets πŸ’›

For this week’s insights, we are moving to a new table: Afternoon C (Julian Zimmermann, Rupert Riedl, Kay Farrell, Martin Riewestahl, Rafael Lima, and Rob Graham), focusing on Fleet Masters (Maintenance & Hardware).

How do you manage a fleet without losing your mind or your margins?

  1. What is the most effective preventative maintenance schedule for a 200+ bike fleet?

The following content is only visible for the Cycle Cities Members.

  • Daily Visual/Auditory Checks: Perform a hands-on check every day when bikes are moved out of the garage and returned, specifically listening for "rattles" or "clunks".
  • Tiered Repair System: Small issues (rattles) are fixed immediately by staff, while "big rattles" are sent to a dedicated mechanic.
  • Strict Reporting Policy: Guides are required to report any breakdowns or locked bikes in the city immediately to prevent loss of fleet control.
  • Weekly Recovery Sweeps: Use a truck once a week to collect any bikes that were abandoned or locked in the city due to mechanical failures.
  • Anti-Puncture Investment: Use the best available anti-flat tires to minimize the need for guides to perform on-tour repairs.

Tool of the Week πŸ› οΈ

In the previous playbook, Capacity & Demand, we looked at how to handle your business constraints: whether your bottleneck is guide availability, bike fleet size, or specific time slots, and how to choose between adding capacity, optimising what you have, or shaping demand.

But making a strategic adjustment (like adding a weekday departure or changing peak pricing) is only half the battle.

How do you know if it actually worked? How do you prevent yourself from making reactive decisions based on a single bad week?

This is where Tool 21: The Bike Tour Operator Dashboard & Monthly Review Routine comes in.

You cannot manage capacity or test new strategies in the dark. Tool 21 provides the simple, 30-minute monthly routine required to connect your operational decisions to real financial results.

Community β€” Highlights ➑️

Don't forget that next week we have our live webinar:

πŸ€– AI-Powered Social Media for Bike Tour Operators

πŸ“… 21 October
πŸ•– 19:00 CET
⏱️ 1 hour
πŸ’» Google Meet (Click here to save it on your calendar)

I am preparing this session to cater to all levels, and I really hope it will be the first of several. It’s a great opportunity to learn what to do (and what not to do) to make social media manageable without feeling overwhelmed.

Hi Reader, I wanted to open this week’s newsletter by addressing some feedback I recently received: it was pretty clear that some of our recent content felt a bit too "AI-generated." You are completely right. To be honest, I tried to do too much with the limited time available, and it showed. I’m working on fixing that right now. Moving forward, you’ll likely see a bit less content across platforms, but it will be much more grounded, practical, and real. On a related note, I really don't like...
